Proposal Forms
Five Proposal Categories
PAPER PROPOSAL
​
A proposal to write a paper to be presented at the Convention. If accepted, the author(s) of a paper proposal will be placed on a panel by the Program Committee.
To submit a paper proposal, fill out a Paper Proposal Form and send it by attachment to darel@uottawa.ca and asnconvention25@gmail.com. The form includes the applicant’s coordinates, paper title, a 500 word abstract and a 100 word biographical statement.
A Fact Sheet must also be filled out online.
If the Paper Proposal has more than one author, a separate Fact Sheet must be filled out for each author intending to attend the Convention if accepted.
PANEL PROPOSAL

A Panel Proposal includes three or four presentations based on written papers, and a discussant. The discussant offers a constructive critique of the written papers at the end of all presentations.
To submit a Panel Proposal, the panel organizer must fill out a Panel Proposal Form and send it by attachment to darel@uottawa.ca and asnconvention25@gmail.com. The form includes the panel title, as well as the coordinates, paper titles, 500 word abstracts and 100 word biographical statements of all panel members.
Each panel member must also fill out a separate Fact Sheet online.
If a paper-based presentation contained in the panel proposal has more than one author, a separate Fact Sheet must be filled out for each author intending to attend the Convention if accepted.
ROUNDTABLE PROPOSAL
​
A Roundtable Proposal includes four presentations not based on written papers. A roundtable generally addresses pressing political questions (such as recent election or protest) or discussions over methodology (such as “ethics in fieldwork”) or historiography. It is not meant to present specific topics based on research.
To submit a Roundtable Proposal, the panel organizer must fill out a Roundtable Proposal Form and send it by attachment to darel@uottawa.ca and asnconvention25@gmail.com. The form includes the roundtable title, as well as the coordinates, presentation titles, a 300 word abstract of the roundtable theme and 100 word biographical statements of all panel members.
Each roundtable member must also fill out a separate Fact Sheet online.
DOCUMENTARY FILM PROPOSAL
​
The Convention invites submissions of documentary films produced in 2019 or 2022, running at least 50 minutes set in an ASN geographical area, or on the themes of nationalism or migration/diaspora in any area of the world. Shorter films cannot be considered.
To submit a documentary film proposal, the applicant must fill out a Documentary Proposal Form and send it by attachment to darel@uottawa.ca and asnconvention25@gmail.com. The form includes the coordinates of the applicant, documentary film title, a 300 word abstract of the film, a secured online link to preview the film, and a 100 word biographical statement of the filmmaker.
The applicant must also fill out a separate Fact Sheet online.
BOOK PANEL PROPOSAL

A Book Panel Proposal includes the author, and three discussants. The discussants offer a constructive critique of the book. To be eligible, a book must have been published between 2024 and early 2025.
To submit a Book Panel Proposal, the panel organizer must fill out a Book Panel Proposal Form and send it by attachment to darel@uottawa.ca and asnconvention25@gmail.com. The form includes the book title, publishing house and year of publication, a 300 word abstract of the book, as well as the coordinates and 100 word biographical statements of each panel members.
Each panel member must also fill out a separate Fact Sheet online.
If the proposed book has more than one author, a separate Fact Sheet must be filled.
A Book Panel Proposal Form can be submitted by the book author, or by someone else. The Program Committee can only consider complete book proposals.
DISCUSSANT PROPOSAL
​
Applicants can send a Discussant Proposal if they are not submitting a Paper Proposal, or part of a Panel Proposal, Roundtable Proposal, or Book Panel Proposal where they will be making a presentation.
The Discussant Proposal Form includes the applicant’s coordinates, fields of interest and a 100 word bio statement.
A Fact Sheet must also be filled out online.
